Our Surprise for Mom!

Curator’s note

Mom's big birthday is Saturday, and her daughter is planning a surprise that starts with the stepdad. Episode 1 lays out the plan: forty guests, a decoy errand and a reconciliation with an aunt who has not spoken to the family in years. It also lays out a private rendezvous for the guest room. Episode 2 shows the daughter sharing the dress for the party, then admitting why she took charge of the planning. Mom arrives home early and the surprise changes meaning. Five episodes, the first two free.

Inside the frame

A house full of party preparations, a stepdaughter with a hidden motive and a mother who could turn up at any time. The taboo is the stepfamily, and the free part stays on whispers and near misses.

Best seen: A pick for golden evenings when you like a plot with balloons, secrets and a slammed door.
