Curator’s note

Jake is newly engaged to Sophie, and the first gift her family hands him is a week at the lake house with her mother. Mrs. Veronica Parker is easy company, quick with a toast and quicker with a dare. Episode 1 delivers dinner, wine and one dance too many, closing on a line about biting that lingers in the air. In episode 2, Sophie is called away to town for work, which leaves Jake alone with her mother, a small chore that needs two pairs of hands and an invitation he should absolutely decline.

Inside the frame

A holiday house with a locked-in guest list, an absent fiancee and a hostess who treats rules as suggestions. The tension lives in doorways and borrowed minutes. Nothing crosses a line on screen; the free episodes keep it all in the glance.

Best seen: Best for a sunny afternoon when you want temptation with a view and nobody there to stop it.

Plate IEpisode 1

A fiance introduces his bride-to-be's mother, Veronica, at a family retreat where a week without obligations beckons. Her husband is delayed, so dinner and conversation happen in his absence, and the mother makes a point of assessing her daughter's fiance. After the daughter turns in, she asks him for one dance and promises, wryly, not to bite on night one.

Plate IIEpisode 2

Awkward goodnights give way to a morning when the daughter has been summoned to work. Left alone with him, the mother asks for help with a stretching routine and observes that he is oddly skilled for a beginner. She announces a shower, leaves the invitation open, and calls his name through the steam.
