Kale was a stable hand until the queen spotted him and decided her bodyguard needed fresh blood. Her ruling is quick: he will stand outside her bedchamber, starting tonight. The catch is a royal law that forbids anyone laying a hand on her, and she has noticed it is silent about her laying hands on him. Episode 1 is measured menace and a racing pulse. In episode 2 she has him bolt the door, balance the royal crown on his palms and repeat the rule back to her, while the court prepares to pick her husband tomorrow. Whose rule is it, really? The piece keeps asking, politely, from behind a locked door.

A queen makes laying a hand on her a capital crime, then promotes a reluctant stable hand to her personal guard. Kale, the soldier nobody else wanted, is assigned to her bedchamber that very night. She explains her choice by the way he meets her gaze, and notes that the law forbids his hands, not hers. His pulse betrays him.

Behind a barred door the queen hands her crown to her guard and cautions that a slip would be treason. She has him repeat the rule that keeps him still, then reveals who the rule truly protects. He objects that he should not be here, and she agrees, which delights her. Tomorrow the court chooses her husband; tonight she sets the crown aside.
