Cleopatra and Caesar

Curator’s note

Caesar commands the Roman legions, and Cleopatra commands his attention. In episode 1 her army presses forward, he refuses to yield, and a tempter in the room suggests a different sort of conquest: the queen herself, laid out on the map. He is married, he reminds everyone, and he exits the scene, sort of. In episode 2 the queen arrives in his tent after a night attack, reminds him of his place and then announces she is carrying his heir. Politics, wars and wives all take a seat. Empire has never been this personal.

Inside the frame

A tent, a war table and two powers who cannot afford a mistake. The forbidden line is Caesar's marriage, the power play is mutual, and the free episodes stay with banter, ambition and dramatic robes.

Best seen: For history buffs who want drama with a toga, fantasy fans and anyone who believes empires are made in private.
