Curator’s note

Amanda has a black-tie evening to attend and a husband who cannot make it, so she grabs the nearest replacement: her stepson, mid video game. He puts on his father's suit, and the guests assume the best. Episode 1 is a full performance of marriage, from the smile to the introductions, and it ends with a hotel key that Dad supposedly booked for the two of them. In episode 2, she says the pretending is over, or perhaps just beginning, and he stalls on the word stepmom.

Inside the frame

A charity gala, a borrowed jacket and a rented room with a view of the choice ahead. The forbidden line is the family tree, the power play is her calm. You can watch the opener without signing in, then register free for more, all of it elegantly hinted.

Best seen: Dress up for it, then settle into the kind of evening where a bluff keeps outrunning the truth.

Plate IEpisode 1

Plate I. A gala, an absent husband and a stepson called in to substitute. Amanda passes him his father's suit and orders him to play the devoted spouse. For the guests he is convincing, for the stepmother he is slightly too convincing. She counts his glances, then reveals the hotel suite his father booked. He is invited inside as her husband.

Plate IIEpisode 2

Plate II. The role play continues once the guests have gone. The stepmother praises his acting and refuses his objections, pointing out that his eyes betrayed him all night. She is no longer anyone's wife this evening, only his stepmother, and she wants him to undo her dress. His father, the plate reminds us, is working.
