Ethan spends a long weekend at the lake house and gets careless with his phone. Jessie, his girlfriend Mia's mother, finds a long string of messages to his friends, all of them about her, all of them rather flattering. She does not scold him. She asks which parts he would like to take back. Ethan, boxed in, admits he meant every word, which is the correct answer and also the problem. Episode 1 is that conversation, conducted in a robe and a very patient voice, with the daughter due back from the lake later. The curator calls it a study in leverage. The kitchen, for its part, has never been more incriminating.
