My Mother-In-Law Wants To Be My Hall Pass

Curator’s note

Kate announces over dinner that she trusts her husband Dan so thoroughly that she would happily give him a hall pass, since he would never cash it in. The table laughs, but her mother Margot corners Dan in the kitchen and asks whether he would. He says no immediately, which she finds charming and a challenge. Book club meets tomorrow evening. In episode 2 she calls him over for a small repair that is not about the repair, makes him say no again, and listens to Kate's phone call with a perfectly straight face. Dan is a saint, or at least a married man.

Inside the frame

A family kitchen with a chaperone problem. Loyalty is the rule being tested, and the free episodes lean on whispers, glances, a stubborn coffee pot and a husband whose polite refusals keep sounding like openings.

Best seen: Reserved for evenings when you want good manners to lose slowly to a mother-in-law with a plan.
